Food is quite the necessity, and gardening, a pleasure. Beautifying your yard with vegetables that will soon be on your plate can be a very satisfying process. We want our food to be delicious and quality is key. Healthy gardens need rich soil.
An inch of soil can take more than 15 years to form. The time frame on this is dependent upon the contributions in the area like plant and animal life. If you are in an environmentally desolate place, you can expedite the process of enriching your soil with compost.
1. First decide where you want your compost to go. You do not want to make it the focal point of your well designed garden. Most people use a large black bin, but you can always economically compromise. If all else fails, use a hole in the ground.
2. On the other end of the spectrum, you can find composting machines for several hundred dollars that will do the compacting and stirring for you. You can find these online and at select home improvement centers.
3. Place your recycling bin in direct sunlight. Heat is essential. The cooler your compost is, the slower it will develop.
4. Your compost, like most plants, will need a healthy balance of carbon and nitrogen. Carbon is higher in brown additions, like wood products, hay, and dead plant leaves. Nitrogen can be derived from green additions like grass and your leftover salad.
5. Be cautious of what you add to your compost. While naturally broken down animal droppings and flesh can make rich land, it is not recommended to keep it contained in a box. Doing so can result in infested compost. Insects will be attracted and you do not want maggots in your compost.
6. Throw in leftovers from salads and spoiled veggies that went neglected in the refrigerator. I even throw occasional egg shells in my compost. Everything that you can put in the compost is one more thing you keep out of a landfill.
7. Grass is a highly beneficial to compost because it contributes nitrogen to the plants. Most people will have this in their yards. Collecting the grass can be as easy as gathering the extra grass that clumps up on a lawn mower blade.
However, if you have highly chemically treated grass, this can negatively affect the pH of your compost. The same can be said for pine needles.
8. Be creative. Common objects should not be easily dismissed. Coffee grounds can attract worms. Worms are great for stirring around and adding nutrients to soil. You can even use a shredded old newspaper.
9. Keep your compost damp, but not soaked. Mix frequently.
10. When your compost is ready to be used, it will be about half the size of your original compost. You can add your compost to your soil up to a month and no less than a couple weeks before you plant your garden.
With these simple to follow tips, you can have healthier soil and tasty produce.
